1. Pick the spot first
- Beside the walkway, never on it. Leave the main walking line, the lift doors, the fire exit and the ramp fully clear.
- Under a light. A rangoli next to the diyas and light strings is what shows up in residents' photos.
- Away from the guard desk. The festive parcel and guest rush happens there, and it gets trampled.
2. Size that works
| Space | Size | Time for 2 volunteers |
|---|---|---|
| Beside the lift lobby / tower entrance | 2 x 2 ft to 3 x 3 ft | about 45 minutes |
| Main lobby corner | 4 x 4 ft | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Main gate / clubhouse front | 5 x 5 ft or larger | 2 to 3 hours, start in the afternoon |
3. Material: powder, flowers or reusable
| Material | Good for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Rangoli powder (with a stencil) | Sharp designs, cheapest per square foot | Smudges with footfall and fan or wind; refresh the edges once or twice in the week |
| Flower petals (marigold, rose, chrysanthemum) | Fragrance, looks rich on Diwali night | Wilts in 1 to 2 days; best laid fresh on the main day |
| Reusable rangoli mat or acrylic tiles | Busy lobbies, stays the whole week, comes back next year | Higher one-time cost; tape the corners so nobody trips |
A common combination: a reusable mat or stencil design for the whole week, with a ring of fresh petals added on Diwali day.
4. Keeping it intact all week
- Mark the edge with a row of LED diyas or a small rope so people walk around it.
- Ask housekeeping not to mop over it; give them a 1 ft margin.
- Keep oil diyas and open flames out of the walkway; LED diyas are safer in a busy lobby. See LED vs oil diyas.
- Photograph it on day one: it's the image residents share in the society group.
5. Make it a resident event
Many societies turn the entrance rangoli into a small competition for kids or towers. NoticeKart has a ready rangoli competition notice you can adapt, and a post-Diwali cleanliness notice for the clean-up after.
Planning the rest of the lobby too? Follow the 4-week committee plan and the lobby decor checklist.
Free printable: the Diwali lobby desk kit gives your guards a guest and delivery register, a lobby welcome sign and a desk rules card, with your society name on them.
